Attached is a folder containing the StarCommand™ 3.1 application for all users of Farallon's StarController® series 200, 300 and 500.
The major change in StarCommand is support for the Farallon® Concentrator, InterRoute/5™, and StarRouter™, newest hardware products from Farallon. Some performance improvements were also implemented. s
The differences between version 3.1 and previous versions are:
• Support for the Farallon Concentrator. The Farallon Concentrator is a space-saving mounting enclosure for Farallon hubs and routers. The Farallon Concentrator simplifies network wiring through the use of a built-in Ethernet backplane and built-in LocalTalk interconnection circuits. StarCommand displays Interface Modules of Farallon Concentrators in the Device List, along with your Farallon hubs and routers. You can use StarCommand to name the Interface Module, record comments about it, and reset it. The Interface Module is an extended management device, providing you with the ability to use StarCommand over AppleTalk networks, as well as over the management bus.
• Support for the InterRoute/5 router and the StarRouter, Farallon’s routing hub. If you own a Farallon StarRouter or an InterRoute/5 router, StarCommand uses the new Router menu to provide you with ways to configure and manage the LocalTalk–EtherTalk routing capabilities and AppleTalk–IP gateway capabilities of these products. Both the StarRouter and the InterRoute/5 are also extended management devices, providing you with the ability to use StarCommand over AppleTalk networks, as well as over the management bus.
• Command name changes. Several command names have been changed in order to show that they apply to routers, gateways, and Interface Modules, as well as to repeating hubs. In most cases, the word “hub” or the word “StarController” is simply changed to the word “device.” Exceptions are “Open StarController,” which is now “Open Port List,” and “Show Event Log,” which is now “Show Session Event Log” (to distinguish it from “Show Router Event History,” which appears in the Router menu and applies to only the selected device).
• New Quick Find command. This new command allows you to quickly locate and select a specific device in the Device List, by specifying the device model and serial number.
• Performance issues:
Those of you who are experiencing either of the following two problems should start using StarCommand 3.1:
1. StarCommand crashes when opening dialog boxes on machines with 16 or more Megabytes of RAM and System 7.
2. Port Tests on StarController PN207 hubs sometimes give false Poor results.
Supplementary files
NOTE: The folder contains files only for users of StarController series 200, 300, and 500. Farallon Concentrator, StarRouter, and InterRoute/5 customers get additional files that ship with the hardware.
The following folders are included in the attached package:
• For PN357/377 Users
This folder contains a firmware program file called PN357/377 Firmware 1.2. This file contains code that is also stored in the currently shipping Farallon StarController hubs, PN357 and PN377. If you have any PN357 or PN377 hubs on your network with older firmware than version 1.2, you need to update them with the latest firmware. To check the version of the firmware currently installed on a PN357 or PN377, run StarCommand and open the Device Info window for the hub. The header will list the firmware version installed. If the version number is previous to 1.2, you need to reprogram the hub with the firmware on this diskette. You reprogram a StarController using the StarCommand Reprogram Device command from the Control menu. With the new firmware, StarCommand finds PN357 and PN377 hubs much more quickly than with the old firmware.
• For StarCommand 2.2.1 Users
This folder contains a utility application called SC 2.2.1 File Converter. This application reads a StarInfo file created by StarCommand 2.2.1 and creates a new StarCommand 3.1 document out of it. It does not delete or change the original StarInfo file.
• Utilities
This folder contains Farallon’s CheckNET™ utility, which you may find helpful for gathering information about your AppleTalk networks.
